Rest In Peace: William Kiel "Gizmo" Bobbitt  05.05.2008  by Unit
It is with deep regret that we share notice of the passing of our team mate, William Kiel "Gizmo" Bobbitt, of Greencastle, PA, who died on Thursday, May 1, 2008. William was a Radio and TV major, student ambassador and an active member of the Roosterhead Rugby Team. Please e-mail Walt ( cze1978@cup.edu) for arrangement information as well as information about donations to the Bobbitt Family.

Alumni  04.15.2008  by Walt
We would like to thank all of the alumni that were able to make it out for this year's Cockfight. Whether it was sharing stories at the bar, playing along side, or against you; having several generations of Roosterheads around was great. For the second year in a row the Old Boys team faced the current Roosterheads in the tournament championship. For all that weren't keeping score the record is 1-1.

During the previous years we have started to fall out of touch with our alumni. This is something that we wish to change. As such, Walt Czekaj will be taking on an alumni coordinator role and serve as a liason between the alumni and the current team. He will keep the team updated about any news going on with the alumni and more importantly let the alumni know how the current team is doing and coordinate alumni weekends throughout the year. Please e-mail him at checkeye03@gmail.com with your contact information.

Summer Recap  08.06.2007  by Shoe
To start off the summer was a rough one for the team with graduation. We wish the best to all of Roosterhead Rugby graduates and hope them the best with their careers and next rugby endeavor.
The team has collectivly participated in two 7 tournaments, the Mud Lobster's Almost Heaven 7's Tournmanet and the 1st annual Pittsburgh 7's Tournament. At Almost Heaven, we were a montly team with Fairmont State. Although we did not place that day, ti was a good experience given it was everyones first seven's experience. A few weeks later a team was formed and entered into the Pittsburgh 7's Tournament and won the Boozer championship. After we watched that PIttsburgh Harlequins achieve another tournament chamionship, they invited the team to come up to Founder's Field to play against two Slippery Rock teams and Clarion Universtiy.
I hope to see everyone there on August 25th and in shape to play another season of Roosterhead Rugby.

YOUNG ANGLERS TAKE TO PIKE RIN COMPETITION HOOK, LINE AND SINKER

By Ron Paglia
FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
(Sunday, April 30, 2006)

Crystal Smith may have been the most popular person at the 13th annual Pike Run Fishing Festival in California -- at least during the countdown to the start of the event.

"They're very eager to get started," Smith, a junior at California University of Pennsylvania, said with a smile just moments before she gave the OK to the more than 130 youngsters ages 15 and younger to begin casting their lines. "They've been waiting for quite a while. They've been asking, 'Is it time yet?'"

Smith, of Canton, was among the Cal U Earth Sciences Department students volunteering their time at the community recreation event at Rotary Park in California. Led by Doug Schneider, a parks and recreation management major from Essex County, N.J., the group also included Nichole Triman, Sandy Mayer, Beth Rainier, Adam Snyder, Joe Costantino, Ben Orendorff, Jeff Frydich and Joe Frydich, Nolan Gilbert and Nick Basko.

Although the official competition didn't begin until Smith gave the go-ahead with her silver and blue bullhorn at 8 a.m., contestants began arriving at the park much earlier.

"We had some children and their parents here at 5:30 a.m.," Schneider said. "They were reserving their places along the banks with lawn chairs. The interest has been building for the past week, and there were a good number of people here when we stocked the water."

Schneider said 700-800 trout, nearly $1,700 worth, were brought to Pike Run from Green Springs Trout Farm near Carlisle. The shipment included between 30 and 40 trout more than 16 inches long and a 21-inch golden trout that "hit the water with a big splash," Schneider said.

Even a lingering rain couldn't dampen the spirits of the young fishing enthusiasts who came to the free, fun-filled, family-oriented event.

"The stream actually rose about 6 inches overnight," Schneider said. "The water is a bit muddy this morning, and that's an advantage for the fish because they're not so visible."

Those conditions didn't deter Logan Koterba, 7, of Richeyville, and his friend, Dakota Dillon, 6, of Brownsville. Each got his limit of five fish.

"It was a lot of fun," Logan said as Cal U student Beth Rainier weighed one of his catches. "We had a good time."

"That's what it's all about, having fun," Schneider said. "We just want to provide the community with an event that the whole family can enjoy."

Schneider said the Pike Run Fishing Festival is coordinated and carried out entirely by the students.

Earth Sciences Department faculty adviser Dr. Thomas Wickham, chairman of the Department of Parks and Recreation Management, said he tries to stay on the sidelines and give the students "the chance to implement some of their classroom experience in the field."

"We've had tremendous support from the university and the community," said Schneider, who has been hunting and fishing for many years. "The faculty has been great. They lay the groundwork for everything but give us a lot of leeway to run the festival and get some valuable experience on our own. It's a great opportunity for us."

Nolan Gilbert, a technical education major from Sagertown, near Meadville, and Nick Basko, also a tech-ed major from the Meadville area, agreed.

"This is an excellent way to learn about dealing with children in a setting outside the classroom," said Gilbert, who plans to become a teacher.

"Just look at those kids and how excited they are," said Basko, who also is looking toward a career in teaching. "It feels good to be a part of this."

Costantino, 23, a parks and recreation management major from Charleroi, said the Pike Run Festival "gives the kids a chance to enjoy a special time."

"There are quality fish in that stream this morning," Costantino said, adding that he's been fishing all his life. "Most of the kids are from this general area, so they didn't have to travel very far to get a chance to catch some prize trout. There are fish in the water like I've never seen before."

And most of the young anglers registering for the competition had their eyes on the trophies to be awarded for the top three fish in three age categories.

"I'm going to get a big one," Craig Gush, 6, of California, said as he displayed a large fishing net. "They're not going to get away."

The Gottheld sisters, Adrianna, 6, and Carina, 10, of Charleroi, expressed similar optimism as they signed in under the watchful eye of their father.

"This is a nice place to bring the kids," Scott Gottheld said. The 35-year-old has more than just a passing interest in Rotary Park -- working for Amberwood Construction Co., he helped to build the park, which includes a walking track and gazebo.

Roger Wheatley, a California resident since 1963, also enjoyed the setting as he took a morning walk around the track.

"It's nice to see so many people here," Wheatley said from under a large umbrella. "This is the highest the stream has been in a week or so, and the rain has made the footing a little tricky. But I doubt that anyone is complaining, especially the kids. They're having a good time."

Schneider recalled that it was cold and rainy for last year's fishing festival and that the Cal U students were hoping for better weather this time around. Undaunted by Mother Nature, Schneider and his crew "camped out" overnight at Rotary Park.

"We had to keep an eye on things," he said under the large tent donated by the Mariscotti Funeral Home. "There were a few people who came here late last night and tried to go fishing, but we had to ask them to leave. The trout that were stocked were strictly for the contest and the stream was closed to everyone until the festival began. We didn't want anyone else catching the fish that were brought here specifically for the kids. I think everyone understood that."

Cooperation is a big part of the Pike Run Fishing Festival, which is cosponsored by California Borough Council. In addition, the committee also extended special thanks to California Mayor Casey Durdines, who also is a Cal U student; the California University Student Association; California Rotary Club; businessman John Mariscotti; Peaceful Springs; Wal-Mart of Belle Vernon; the university's Parks and Recreation Society and Travel and Tourism Program; and the Roosterhead Rugby Club.

"It's truly a team effort," Schneider said. "It signifies how well the university and the community can work together, and the real winners in the long run are the kids."

Smiles on the faces of the young anglers emphasized that point.

Roosterheads David Banta and Scott Mariana Graduate  12.11.2005  by Unit
The Roosterhead Rugby Football Club would like say congratulations and good luck as two huge assets to this team, David Banta and Scott Mariana move on and graduate from California University of Pennsylvania this coming weekend.

David Banta, from Edinboro, PA, joined the team as a sophomore in the spring of 2003. Banta started his career as a prop and lock but soon it became evident that Banta was talented in every pack position and even played inside center against Madison in Washington Rugby Club’s Cherry Blossom tournament. As a junior, Dave was elected Vice President of the team and blossomed as a talented hooker and dominating 8-man. Banta was revered throughout collegiate rugby and the Allegheny Rugby Union for his toughness, skill and intensity.

Scott Mariana, from Pittsburgh, PA, joined the team as a junior in the spring of 2004. Scott played as a lock that first year and quickly became a huge asset to the team as a dominating jumper in line-outs. Scott’s ability to carry the ball became apparent and soon he was moved to the flanker and 8-man positions where his skills could be truly displayed. In September of this year Scott scored 2 tries against Robert Morris, and came dangerously close to scoring a third in maybe his best game of his career. Scott will be remembered for his speed, power, and superb jumping ability.
